The best advice for Top Fuel records at the NHRA New England Nationals this weekend was to always have an eraser on available.
With two passes at over 340 mph and a.007-second victory margin over Tony Stewart, who progressed to his fifth consecutive final round, Brittany Force destroyed her own New England Dragway speed record from the previous year on Sunday in Epping, New Hampshire.
Prior to a career-ending crash last June, Force had the most recent of his 157 NHRA victories.
It was at this racecourse that I last joined him in the winners circle. I therefore wanted to win this for him. “I dedicate this victory right here to him,” she remarked. “Everything he’s done over the last year, it’s been really tough, and we’re so proud of him,” she continued, suppressing her tears and hinting at his rehabilitation from a traumatic brain injury diagnosis. Simply said, I’m glad to have him here with me. He must accompany me out here. He is my greatest source of support.
She and the renowned Shirley Muldowney are tied for the most Top Fuel victories by a woman after this 18th victory.
Stewart, who extended his points lead, said, “Brittany deserved to win the race. They threw down in the semifinals. It was impressive to see how great they ran. I was baffled by it, so it was cool to see big numbers like that and be part of it. Having two wins under our belt helped to soften the blow a little bit.”
