The only SEC team to retain a scholarship player in the spring portal is Alabama.

This spring, Alabama did something that is very difficult to do in the current era of college football.

Despite one scholarship player leaving Tuscaloosa, the Crimson Tide managed to make it through the spring transfer portal window. With the exception of Alabama, which managed to get through the gateway window and emerge with zero scholarship players looking for better opportunities, every other SEC team saw roster losses this spring.

Kalen DeBoer will have a strong start to his second season as head coach after Alabama accomplished the nearly unimaginable this spring. Additionally, it speaks well of the work that Crimson Tide football general manager Courtney Morgan has done.

The situation in Tuscaloosa last spring is entirely different from the roster stability Alabama has attained this spring. There was a significant player exodus from Alabama upon Nick Saban’s retirement in January 2024, as many players were uncertain of the Crimson Tide’s future without Saban.

That spring departure might have been the first indication that DeBoer’s first season at Alabama wouldn’t be very successful. Since it didn’t, the Crimson Tide lost their bowl game and finished with a 9-4 record—a respectable record elsewhere but not in Tuscaloosa—after starting the game strongly and limping to the end.

The mere fact that Alabama isn’t losing so much coming into the summer should pave the way for greater success in the 2025 campaign.
