It’s not getting much love that the Wolverines are going to win their conference.
The last time Michigan football played, they were 8–5, but people in Ann Arbor have high hopes for the 2025 season. At the end of the 2024 season, the Wolverines beat Ohio State and Alabama in the ReliaQuest Bowl. The Michigan Wolverines also had a great signing class. Five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood was signed, and he is expected to lead the team to victory.
Michigan used to play in the Big Ten not too long ago. The Wolverines won three straight Big Ten titles, made it to the College Football Playoff three times, and won the whole thing in 2023. But for some fans, the Connor Stallion story seems like it happened a long time ago.
But now it’s 2025, and new statistics show how likely it is that Michigan will not only make it back to the National Championship Game, but also win the Big Ten and make it into the College Football Playoff.
ESPN put out its Football Power Index (FPI) for all college football teams going into 2025. Michigan football came in at No. 17 overall.
Here is how ESPN breaks down the Wolverines’ percentages:
Planned wins and losses for 2025: 8.4 to 3.7
0.6% of people who win get something.
94.2% of 6+ bets win.
6% to win the conference
25.3% for CFP
Make it to the national championship game: 2.6%
Win Title in the country: 1%
It’s a lot easier to make it into the College Football Playoff now than it was when Michigan won the whole thing two years ago. The Wolverines were one of the top four teams in the country, since there were 12 other teams in the top 12, one of which was from Group 5. It will be easier for the Wolverines to play in 2025 than it was in 2024, especially in the Big Ten.
Michigan’s offense will be much better than it was last year. No one will know for sure what Michigan will be like until they play at Michigan this fall. Michigan’s passing game was ranked 131st, but that will only get better with Underwood and new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey.
The Big Ten is tough, with teams like Ohio State, Penn State, Oregon, and many more. In 2025, Michigan won’t be an easy out.
