New development surfaces over Barry Bannan’s future at Sheffield Wednesday

Despite ongoing speculation over Barry Bannan’s future at Sheffield Wednesday, the Owls’ captain is expected to be involved when Henrik Pedersen’s side travel to Bristol City on Saturday lunchtime.

The Sheffield Star reports that, although the 36-year-old has attracted interest from Championship rivals – most notably play-off hopefuls Millwall, managed by his fellow Scot Alex Neil – he remains set to feature this weekend.

The 2025/26 campaign has long been viewed as a lost cause for Wednesday, largely due to the club’s severe financial problems during the final months of Dejphon Chansiri’s turbulent ownership.

While there was an emotional reaction when the Thai businessman’s tenure ended after the club entered administration on October 24, supporters have had little to cheer since, with uncertainty in the Hillsborough boardroom continuing as the winter transfer window edges towards its close.

That instability has left Pedersen limited in the market, with only loan arrivals Murphy Cooper and Jaden Heskey joining from QPR and Manchester City respectively since the turn of the year – both moves revealed exclusively by Football League World.

Speculation over a potential takeover led by former professional poker player James Bord continues, but on the pitch matters have gone from bad to worse.

Tuesday’s 2-0 home defeat to Birmingham City saw Wednesday set an unwanted club record, extending their winless run to 21 matches. They remain on minus seven points with 19 games still to play.

Bannan’s reaction after being substituted for Jarvis Thornton in the closing moments of that defeat only fuelled talk of a possible exit. However, while his longer-term future remains uncertain ahead of the February 2 deadline, a departure is not expected to materialise before this weekend’s trip to Ashton Gate.
