‎Medical scheduled: Stoke City close in on record-breaking transfer

Go Ahead Eagles forward Milan Smit is closing in on a winter switch to Stoke City, with Dutch outlets ESPN NL and De Telegraaf both reporting that a deal is on the verge of being completed.

The 22-year-old is expected to bolster Mark Robins’ attacking options as Stoke push for a play-off place, sitting seventh in the Championship and just two points off the top six with a game in hand.

Reports in the Netherlands claim Stoke have agreed a €5.5m fee with Go Ahead Eagles, with only a medical standing between Smit and a move to the bet365 Stadium. De Telegraaf backs up that figure, stating both clubs are fully aligned on the transfer.

Smit is due to undergo his Stoke City medical on Wednesday and, should everything go smoothly, he is set to put pen to paper on a contract running until 2029.

The Dutch club signed Smit from SC Cambuur in August 2024 for around €800,000 and are now poised to secure a significant profit. His form has played a major role in attracting interest, having registered 13 goals and five assists in 54 appearances, including 10 goals and two assists from 28 outings this season.

Stoke had explored several forward options ahead of the January window, including a move for Mjällby AIF striker Abdoulie Manneh, but that pursuit was eventually abandoned.

If completed, the deal would represent a new club-record sale for Go Ahead Eagles, surpassing the €4.5m they received from Rangers for Oliver Antman last summer.
