Lane Hutson’s impressive rookie season was rewarded on Tuesday.
The Montreal Canadiens defenseman’s family surprised him with the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s rookie of the year. The trophy is awarded annually “to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition.”
Hutson concluded the 2024-25 season with six goals and 60 assists, tying Larry Murphy (60 in 1980-81) for the most assists by a rookie defenseman. The 66 points trailed just Brian Leetch (71) and Gary Suter (68).
Hutson attended Boston University for two seasons before being picked by Montreal in the second round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. The blueliner is a two-time First Team All-American, a two-time Hockey East First Team All-Star, and was named New England’s best defenseman in both of his Terrier seasons.
Hutson scored 97 points (30 goals, 67 assists) in 77 games for BU, leading all current NCAA defensemen.
Huston received 165 of the possible 191 first-place votes. Another former BU alum and San Jose Sharks center got third in the poll.
