Football coach at Alabama One early list of assistants who are likely to become head coaches includes Ryan Grubb.

Under Nick Saban, the Alabama Crimson Tide had a lot of former offensive and defensive coordinators who went from being assistant coaches in Tuscaloosa to being head coaches at big Power 4 schools.

And Kirby Smart is the best example of this. He left Alabama after the 2015 national title season and is now the head coach at Athens for the 10th year. It was Smart who brought Georgia football back to life and helped the Bulldogs win two national titles.

Like everyone else, Kalen DeBoer has a long way to go before he can match the amount of former assistant coaches at Alabama who are now in charge of other teams. But at least one national news source thinks Ryan Grubb, who has been DeBoer’s offensive coordinator for a long time, is a great assistant coach who could soon be in the running for a big head coaching job.

David Cobb, a college football analyst for CBS Sports, thinks that Grubb is the best assistant to keep an eye on as a possible future head coach for the 2025 season.
It will be Grubb’s first season back with DeBoer in Tuscaloosa. He will be in charge of building an explosive system around a quarterback who is making his first start. Simpson was picked as the choice to be Alabama’s quarterback after a strong spring. In April, Grubb said that the former five-star quarterback had “earned” the job after the Crimson Tide’s A-Day event.

“I know everybody wants to know about that position and where things are at, and I would say this: at the end of the day, if we’re playing a football game tomorrow, Ty Simpson would start,” he said. “He deserved that.” I understand that’s the line everyone wants, but he earned it.

First game of the 2025 season for Alabama will be on August 30, 2025, at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee. The game is against the Florida State Seminoles. The game starts at 2:30 p.m. CT. The game will be shown on ABC.
