TUSCALOOSA, AL The Crimson Tide’s 2025 recruiting class immediately gained national attention when five-star quarterback Keelon Russell of Duncanville, Texas, formally flipped his commitment from SMU to Alabama in a shocking move that rocked the college football recruiting world.
Russell, who is widely considered the No. 2 quarterback in the 2025 cycle, made headlines in June 2024 when he committed to Alabama, beating out a number of elite colleges. With a rare combination of arm power, poise, and next-level decision-making, the 6’3″ dual-threat sensation won MVP at the Elite 11 Finals, capping his ascent to fame.
Russell remarked following his pledge that “Alabama felt like home — the system, the coaching, the opportunity to compete at the highest level.”
SMU suffered a serious setback with Russell’s flip, as they had wanted to use the hometown hero as the cornerstone of their Big 12 ascent. Rather, Alabama adds another elite quarterback to a roster that is already full thanks to head coach Kalen DeBoer, who hasn’t spent any time in putting together a recruiting class that is on par with Nick Saban’s best.
With Russell as quarterback, Alabama football’s future appears not only promising but championship-caliber.
Stay tuned, Tide lovers. We are entering a new era.
