Birmingham City confirm defender transfer after deal is sanctioned

Alfons Sampsted has completed a permanent departure from Birmingham City after sealing a move to Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles.

The Iceland international leaves St Andrew’s 18 months after first arriving from FC Twente, initially on loan before making the switch permanent last summer.

While he was part of the Blues squad that lifted the League One title, Sampsted was largely a squad player under Chris Davies rather than a regular starter.

In total, the 27-year-old made 31 appearances for Birmingham City, most of them from the bench. He did, however, earn two Championship starts over the Christmas period, featuring against Southampton and Watford. Those outings proved brief, with Davies restoring Tomoki Iwata to the right-back role soon after.

Sampsted’s exit had been delayed earlier in the window due to Birmingham’s lack of defensive options, but the return of Bright Osayi-Samuel from the Africa Cup of Nations has now allowed the club to sanction his move.

He becomes the latest player to leave the club this month, following Lyndon Dykes, Keshi Anderson and Marc Leonard out the door.
