Swansea City complete loan deal for £10m-rated Premier League winger

Swansea City have completed their second piece of business of the January transfer window after agreeing a loan deal for Brentford winger Gustavo Nunes.

The Brazilian wide man follows Joel Ward through the door, with the experienced defender having arrived earlier in the window on a free transfer.

Nunes has found opportunities limited at Brentford this season, although he has been named in two Premier League matchday squads. He featured three times in the top flight last campaign and will now spend the remainder of the season with the Swans.

Strengthening the wide areas has been a clear priority for Swansea this month. The club previously explored moves for Jesurun Rak-Sakyi and also considered Liel Abada, but attention has now turned to Nunes. The 20-year-old joined Brentford from Gremio in 2024 in a deal worth around £10m.

Head coach Vitor Matos outlined what Nunes brings to the squad, highlighting his one-v-one ability, creativity and technical quality. Matos noted that the winger is aware of the differences between the Premier League and the Championship and believes the focus will now be on helping him adapt and get the best out of his talent. Comfortable on either flank, Nunes is regarded as strong in his first touch and dribbling.

During his time at Gremio, Nunes made 20 appearances in Brazil’s top division, scoring three goals and registering one assist. His early spell at Brentford was disrupted by injury, though he eventually made his debut as a late substitute against Arsenal and went on to make two further cameo appearances.

He remains highly regarded at the Gtech Community Stadium, having signed a six-year contract with the Bees.

Nunes trained with his new Swansea team-mates on Thursday and could be in contention for the upcoming trip to Hull City. His arrival may also raise questions over the future of Burnley loanee Manuel Benson, whose situation is still unclear.

Elsewhere, club sources have played down reports of interest in Elfsborg forward Jalal Abdullai, despite claims from Sweden suggesting Swansea were considering a £2m move.

While the 21-year-old had been monitored alongside interest from Preston and QPR, Swansea are not expected to pursue the deal. Suggestions linking the club with Sheffield Wednesday forward Bailey Cadamartari have also been dismissed.
