‎James McClean’s Wrexham farewell turns ugly with explicit message

The former Republic of Ireland international has rarely been far from controversy during his playing career.

James McClean closed the chapter on his time at Wrexham in provocative fashion, making a rude gesture towards opposition supporters as he left the pitch at the Racecourse Ground for the final time.

McClean, who arrived at the club in 2023 and played a key role in their rise from League Two to the Championship, has long been a divisive figure, frequently attracting abuse from rival fans throughout his career.

It was confirmed over the weekend that the Wrexham captain had departed the club with immediate effect, returning to Ireland to join League of Ireland side Derry City after making more than 100 appearances for the Red Dragons.

The 36-year-old attended Tuesday night’s 1-1 Championship draw with Leicester City to say goodbye to the home supporters, but could not resist one final moment of controversy, aiming an offensive gesture at the travelling Foxes fans while applauding the Wrexham crowd.

McClean later reignited the reaction after full-time by posting a blunt, explicit message on social media, underlining his defiant farewell.
